Marriage and Family Therapist in Atlanta
My Approach To Couples Therapy
Do you feel like things are not the same in your relationship anymore? Perhaps it is the stress, the conflicting schedules, the constant feeling of tiredness, or difficulty communicating. You still remember the days when you felt truly connected and happy, but you are unsure what changed. Seeking help feels scary, and you are not sure where to start.
My goal as a couples therapist is to facilitate healing, increase intimacy, and strengthen the bonds between couples. Through the most researched form of couples therapy with proven outcomes, the Gottman Method, I can teach you how to better communicate and problem-solve. I can also help promote affection and an increased sense of connection in your relationship once again.
The path towards getting your relationship back on track starts now.
While our practice specializes in couples counseling, our therapists also work with individuals who want support for common challenges such as depression, anxiety, stress, and relationship concerns. Many clients come to us individually to build skills, improve emotional regulation, or process life transitions, whether or not their partner participates in therapy. Our clinicians use the same evidence-based, research-driven approaches to help individuals create healthier relationships—with themselves and with others.
My Experience
"Born and raised in Belo Horizonte, Brazil, Giovanna brings a multicultural approach to the forefront of the therapy room--providing an open and accommodating space to her clients. Gio also provides therapeutic services in a variety of languages: English, Spanish, and Portuguese--which is a great asset for multicultural couples.
After getting her B.A. in Psychology at the University of Virginia and her M.S. in Marriage and Family Therapy at Auburn University, Gio completed her track towards full licensure as a Marriage and Family Therapist in the state of Georgia (2500+ client contact hours over no less than 2 years). Gio has completed Level 1 and Level 2 of the Gottman Method and she is Certified in Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (C-DBT)--a great approach for teaching emotional regulation to couples and individuals. Gio also has extensive experience working with parents, premarital couples, infertility, infidelity, and discernment counseling (couples on the brink of divorce)."
Outside work, I am passionate about traveling, hiking, and playing squash. You will also often find me watching cute animal videos in my spare time.
Working with LGBTQIA+ couples
I'm a dedicated and versatile individual committed to making a positive impact in both my professional and service endeavors. I take pride in being Safe Zone certified as well as an LGBTQIA+ ally.
At the Auburn University Marriage and Family Therapy Center, one of my focuses was providing therapeutic services to couples and individuals going through experiences such as coming out and dealing with gender dysphoria. Understanding the unique challenges faced by these clients, I strive to create a nurturing and non-judgmental space for them to express their thoughts and feelings openly and securely.
